Rice vs Houston Part II 7pm Hofheinz Pavillion
Rice (10-9, 4-2) has won five of the past six meetings with UH (10-9, 4-2) including a 72-67 victory at Autry Court on January 17th. UH led by as many as 24 in the 2nd half, only to self-destruct down the stretch.
Keys to victory for Rice: Post up Morris Almond early and often. The Cougars have handled the nation’s leading scorer well on the perimeter the last three games. Marcus Malone is a good enough defender to harass Almond on the ball, but he will give up 4 inches and 15 pounds of muscle on the low block. Almond got to the foul line 20 times last game against the Cougars. The Cougars only inside threat is Jahmar Thorpe. Early looks for Greg Killings could get Thorpe in foul trouble. Either Lorenzo Williams or Chris Hagan must play well against the Cougars pressure defense.
Keys to victory for UH: Press, Press, Press! Rice was helpless against a lesser defensive team (Tulane) last Saturday. Double team Morris Almond on the block before he makes his move. More Nic Mosely…the freshman from Bellville has outplayed the more highly regarded Deion Dowell the last few games. Take Rice seriously. The Cougars have had the better team on paper the last three games and have struggled to pull out one close victory in the three matchups.
What to expect: The Cougars have not lost since the 1st Rice game. It took half a season to figure it out, but the Cougars focus much more offensively when they are playing high energy pressure defense. Rice is likely to turn the ball over in what should be a hostile environment at Hofheinz. The Owls usually raise their game against the Cougars. The game just means more to them. The better team is at home. I like UH 73 Rice 67.
