Here's the video of the final 5 minutes of the contest, which was essentially a two-horse...errr two-dog race between Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi.
Be listening closely for the following lines from Paul Page and Rich Shea on the mikes...
--- "This would be the greatest moment in the history of American sports if Chestnut can bring the belt home to Coney Island, it's been gone for 9 years..."
--- "Kobayashi brought it today, unbelievable valor from this man..."
--- "Unbelievable valor from that man right there, Joey Chestnut. He may indeed have changed the course of this nation.......Chestnut is a true American hero."
Finally at the end of the broadcast Page did say he hoped you enjoyed the hyperbole...I would hope so, considering we're kinda at war right now, gents.
BTW - do you think last year's quotes were better? Things like
"The sport is really seeing an influx of talent all at once, these guys are like the 1983 QB class with Marino, Kelly and Elway."and
"Chestnut is like the Vijay Singh of this sport, when everyone else is on the 19th hole he's out there working on his putting game."

Back to work for the Astros as the last series before the All-Star break begins against the Mets. They've taken 3 of 4 from Colorado and 2 of 3 from Philly. The Mets are reeling after the Rockies swept them and the Astros themselves might really start believing they could be on to something if they can do the same and take another series against a likely playoff team.

Numbers that should impress...Hunter Pence finally qualifies for the regular season batting races after catching up with the requisite 3.1 plate appearances per team game played. Among NL'ers, he ranks 2nd to Matt Holliday in batting average (.352 to .346), and 3rd in slugging (Bonds - .614, Prince Fielder - .604, Pence - .598). Shouldn't surprise you that each of those other 3 will be in San Francicso representing the NL at the All-Star game.---------------------------------------
Did you catch injured Adam Everett in the booth with Jimmy D and Bill Brown throughout most of the early innings? He mentioned he made a deal with Mark Loretta in spring training that if Everett would teach Loretta how to play shortstop, then he'd teach Everett how to hit. Good sense of humor for the .228 hitter. They also showed Everett the play that sent him to the booth when Carlos Lee snapped his twig in two. Everett had not yet viewed the play. Wow.---------------------------------------
--- more throughout the day as always - - - WEXAn interesting list of top MLB free agents-to-be among position players from Jerry Crasnick over at the worldwide leader. Note the mention in the Mike Lowell blurb that Mike Lamb is quite possibly the second best third baseman on the market this offseason.
---------------------------------------Mark Cuban shares his thoughts on how the media has changed since the advent of blogging. Much of his rant, although as usual, pretty darn accurate, stems from the recent chatter about his legal entanglements with former head coach Don Nelson.

Thank god we can all rest easy now that a chic-sitcom from HBO with 3 fairly unlikable older actresses and a sneaky-hot Kristin Davis will be made into a movie. You'd think a something titled Sex in the City, with a character referred to as "Mr. Big" might deliver something more likely to be viewed in a personal booth or in a dimly lit back room, but alas it's merely another bad mainstream movie idea. Not even an idea, but merely a TV show blown up to the bigscreen - very creative.
