Football Season Begins, Once Again the Astros are Still Dead

- Quick reminder, it's just one preseason game. Nothing too great and nothing too terrible from the Texans. (Except for the pathetic performance of ex-NFL QB Bradlee Van Pelt. I say ex- because if he makes an NFL roster, then whatever team that is needs to fire their personnel people.)

- Still, though you can give positive grades to the special teams, especially the blocking and coverage units. There were lanes all night for all the return men - Jacoby Jones, Jerome Mathis and Bethel Johnson. Both Matt Turk and Chad Stanley fared well with their punting and 4-4 on field goals for Kris Brown. This will be an area of strength yet again.

- Impressed by the speed of the receivers as a whole for the first time ever. Hopefully they can catch, but I know they can run. Andre Johnson, Jones, Mathis, Bethel Johnson and Andre Davis all have well-above average speed, and all 4 of them won't even make the team. I don't think Keenan McCardell is a lock to make it either. But he should at least see the field for the first time this week and in the game against Arizona Saturday.

- Most of the areas of concern are the same as before. Poor short yardage, poor pass rush, no big plays. But I'm sorry until they trot out this vanilla game plan in a more meaningful game, I'm not going to be all that concerned.

- Had the Astros not blown leads Friday & Saturday against the Brewers, they would be 5 games back of the Brewers and 5.5 games behind the first place Cubs. And you know what? They still wouldn't be a good team. The only thing the Astros must do is make sure they learned from last year's mistake. That mistake was being confused by the difference b/w being in the race and being a good baseball team. They were an average team last year that had 1 long winning streak at the end of the year, which happened to coincide with a Cardinals slide. Apparently management was fooled into thinking that meant the team was good. It cost them dearly this year b/c they didn't address their problems in the offseason. They are in jeopardy of doing that again this offseason.

- The deadline to sign drafted players is Wednesday at 11pm central. It doesn't look like the Astros are going to persuade LSU stud recruit Chad Jones to join the organization.
