Knight is done, Rockets rolling but..., Clemens speaks
Bobby Knight rather abruptly and surprisingly quietly resigned Monday as head coach of Texas Tech. Over 2 years ago, his son, Pat, was named head coach designate and he'll take over immediately. Less than a 6 months ago, Bobby signed a 3-year extension that had him under contract until the 2011-12 season. That is very, very odd that recently he decided to coach 5 more seasons, then abruptly call it a career just 20 games later.
His 902 wins is admirable, his graduation rate and pure coaching ability and desire are as well. However, he got way too much pleasure of belittling people. Players, other coaches, administrators, fans, media - it didn't matter. He who screams loudest gets his way - is basically how he went through the last 30 years of his life. He dared Indiana to fire him - and they did.
He came to Tech following James Dickey who led the Red Raiders to 3 NCAA tournaments in 1o seasons. Knight brought them 4 NCAA tourneys in 8 years. Not a huge difference. Nor was his 53-49 conference record as compared to the 75-75 posted by Dickey. Both of those marks stand as the lowest conference winning % in Tech history. Knight's overall record of 138-82 (.628) is the top winning percentage for any coach all-time at Tech. As you can imagine, it comes largely due to the normally weak non-conference schedule, one that is hand-picked by Knight through most of those years.
I can't deny that he's one of the greatest college coaches of all-time, but that doesn't mean he's a swell guy. Really enjoyed his cursing post-game press conference while his grandson sat on the dais with him.
For your listening pleasure, here's a Bobby Knight soundboard. Much of this you'll hear tonight on the show. btw - track 6 is very, very NSFW.
