Free Agency...for the rest of the NBA

The Rockets are in a financial position that makes it very difficult to be legitimate players on the open market in free agency. Corey Maggette, Baron Davis, Josh Smith & Luol Deng are all guys that could seemingly be the final piece to a championship team. But that ain't happening unless there is a sign-and-trade deal. And that ain't happening unless Elgin Baylor or Chris Mullin is enamored with Luther Head, Chuck Hayes or the like in return.

Instead Daryl Morey is attacking Brent Barry, whom the team nearly signed late last year when he became a free agent after Seattle traded for him and then released him.

Time to beat that dead horse. I know Scott Boras is the agent for Kyle Lohse, but he signed a 1-yr deal with the Cards for around $5 million. This is the guy I said for months during the offseason who the Astros should have signed. That money is extremely reasonable and it was VERY obvious that he was the best reasonable pitcher on the market. Not Livan Hernandez. Not Carlos Silva. Certainly not Shawn Chacon.

From June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2008 - Lohse is 16-4 with a 3.93 ERA.

Nah, the Astros couldn't use that. He's 10-2 this year and I'm guessing his 5-0 mark in June will net him pitcher of the month award.

Quick J.R. Towles update. He homered for the 3rd consecutive game Monday night and is 8-for-his-last-15, scoring 7 runs and driving in 5. For the season in 17 games, he's hitting .288.
