Now that it is game week for the Texans, time to get ready for the season. So here's my 53-man roster for the Texans. Each Monday b/w now and final cut day, I'll revise the list as necessary. I'll start with a look back at the position breakdown they finished with in game 17 in 2007, followed by my best guess for how they open in game 1 of 2008.
End of 2007 Roster breakdown by position
Offense - (26), QB (3), RB (2), FB (2), WR (5), TE (4), OL (10)
Defense - (24 ), DL (10), LB (5), DB (9)
Specialists - (3), K, P, LS
2008 Opening day projected 53-man roster (version 1.0)
Offense (24)
QB (2) - M. Schaub, S. Rosenfels
RB (4) - A. Green, C. Taylor, S. Slaton, D. Walker
FB (1) - V. Leach
OL (10) - E. Winston, C. Pitts, C. Myers, M. Brisiel, D. Brown, E. Salaam, F. Weary, C. White, K. Studdard, R. Butler
TE (3) - O. Daniels, J. Dreesen, M. Breuner
WR (4) - A. Johnson, K. Walter, A. Davis, J. Jones
Tough call on carrying 10 OL, I think that number will shrink throughout the year. The Weary situation is a difficult call, if he doesn't return soon, they'll have to let him go and likely keep a 5th WR which is definitely David Anderson.
I never thought Mike Bell was a serious candidate to make this team, merely signed for a healthy body who knows the system. He came to keep a step behind and got hurt immediately. Not good, especially since he was only here since Chris Brown stayed true to his reputation of constantly being hurt. That's what gets him cut, they can't afford to keep him with Ahman Green already here.
I know Kubiak has flirted with the idea of keeping 3 quarterbacks and because every game is so precious if they truly believe playoffs are in the cards, having a 3rd guy in reserve on game day makes sense. But I think he'll just deem that roster spot to valuable elsewhere.
Defense (26)
DL (9) - M. Williams, A. Okoye, T. Johnson, A. Weaver, E. Cochran, A. Maddox, T. Bulman, N.D. Kalu, F. Okam
LB (7) - D. Ryans, M. Greenwood, Z. Diles, X. Adibi, R. Colvin, C. Thompson, K. Bentley
DB (10) - F. Bennett, J. Reeves, A. Molden, J. Fletcher, D. Roberson, W. Demps, C.C. Brown, G. Earl, B. Harrison, D. Barber
Specialists (3)
K Kris Brown, P Matt Turk, LS Bryan Pittman
There are lots of defensive guys who are on the bubble. Seven linebackers is a ton for a team that plays a 4-3, but Adibi is a roster lock and each of the additional LBs were free agent signees this offseason. Colvin is practically a DE anyway and they need the others for special teams anyway. Harrison is far from a lock, but he is getting a strong look. Roberson or Fletcher could go also if another spot is needed elsewhere due to short-term injury.
Notable Cuts
QB Shane Boyd (will be back the second a QB gets hurt)
RB Chris Brown, Mike Bell (Brown could never shake injuries-no surprise)
WR David Anderson (last cut, Weary grabs 53rd spot, keep an eye on this one)
OT Brandon Frye
CB Demarcus Faggins (hard to believe he made it this long)
S Nick Ferguson
DT Jeff Zgonina
FB Jameel Cook
LB Kevis Coley, Ben Moffitt
PUP list - Dunta Robinson
