It's all over and the Texans win again. Lots of offense, very little defense. Texans first teamers started off nicely but soon after they got little pressure on Drew Brees and he picked them apart - picking on Reeves repeatedly. The first sack of the preseason was finally delivered in the 4th quarter by Tim Bulman. The pass rush is an obvious concern.
Steve Slaton looked like the Texans should strongly consider getting him some first team reps this week and again on Friday when they play at the Cowboys.

Sorry dinner break. Second week in a row that David Anderson has been a standout performer. He is making the coaches more and more confident having him out there. What he is doing right now is putting the idea in the coaches mind that not only should he make the team (which he obviously has done), but he should be active every week. He helps this team.

I mentioned this throughout the week and again on the pregame show, the Saints are a great team to play in the preseason. An elite offense that will really test you and a run of the mill defense that will allow the offense to generate some confidence.
The starting defense played the entire first half against the starters for the Saints. After allowing just 9 yards on the first 7 plays, the defense was torched for 187 yards on the final three drives of the first half and allowed the Saints to take a 20-17 lead into the break.
The offense looked very good scoring on all three of the first half possessions (not including their lame running out the clock effort to end the half). Schaub finishes his night 14-16, 187 yds and 2 TDs. That's good for a 154.9 QB rating, a perfect rating is 158.3 - quite simply he was fantastic.

A truly embarrasing drive for newly signed free agent CB Jacques Reeves. He got physically abused by Reggie Bush. Just got thrown to the ground by Bush on a run and he dove for Bush's legs on his touchdown catch. Bad idea, Bush hurdled him easily and you'll be seeing that play all week long on the highlight reels.
No change from me since the announcement of the Reeves signing - a mistake at any amount, a big mistake at $20 million. He should not be the starter. (HOU 14-13, 2nd Q)

(7:47pm)
Schaub is razor-sharp right now. He's 11-13 to open the game with two touchdowns and his only two incompletions came on a ball he threw into the ground on a screen pass that was doomed and a tipped ball that Andre Davis couldn't hang onto. It's also worth mentioning the rookie LT Duane Brown is faring very well against DE Will Smith. That drive looked awfully easy.
The Saints are not a good defense and the Texans are really taking it to them. It's still nothing but first teamers out there and the Texans are moving the ball at will. Two drives that began inside the Texans 30-yard line, both ending in touchdown tosses and Houston is 4-4 on third down. (HOU 14-6, 2nd Q)

(7:34pm)
We've hardly mentioned C.C. Brown's name this preseason but he made a big touchdown saving hit on Mark Campbell to jar the ball loose on a 3rd down play. The Brees pass was right on the money, but Brown was right where he needed to be to deliver the jarring blow. Key Stat - Saints now 0-3 on third down. (HOU 7-6, 1st Q)

(7:23pm)
The opening drive is a sure sign of why there is no QB controversy in Houston. Schaub played strong in the pocket, took his hits and his only incompletion came on the thwarted screen pass. His other 4 throws were dead solid perfect, including a great 3rd down throw to Andre Davis. His TD toss to Kevin Walter was a thing of beauty. Both Chris Brown and Chris Taylor were running hard and headed downfield - no dancing. (HOU 7-3, 1st Q)

(7:17pm)
Matt Schaub takes his first hit as the Texans tried to set up a screen on 2nd and five, Schaub threw the ball away and rookie Sedrick Ellis followed thru with the hit. Schaub is fine, haha.

(7:13pm)
Good sign for the defense as they force the second three and out to start the game. Thanks to Jacoby's miscue, they had to do so facing a 1st and goal. Bush now has 3 carries - 3 yards with a long of one yard. Mario caught him in the backfield on one of his touches.

(7:11pm)
Surprise, surprise, Reggie Bush decided to put on the pads. First series for the Saints, he got nothing.
But the big news for the opening series is after forcing a punt, Jacoby Jones fumbled the punt, just simply not catching the ball - no hit required. Expect David Anderson to open the season as the Texans punt returner.
