The Rockets preseason ended last night and they won. That was extremely unimportant on a night that had Yao Ming limping off to the lockerroom before the end of the 1st quarter and Tracy McGrady wincing in pain time after time after time.
Worry not, despite a slip that caused a minor groin strain, Yao Ming returned to the game before the end of the half and played 33 minutes and scored 17 points. McGrady didn't look very comfortable during his first ten minutes or so on the floor, but over his 33 minutes of play he got into the flow more and more. His problems are just what he said they'd be - no lift, he's weak and he needs to play to get better. He still managed to his half his shots (7-14), grabbed 6 boards and had 4 steals (also 4 turnovers and zero assists.)
From midway thru the 2nd quarter deep into the 3rd quarter might have been the worst stretch of basketball the Rockets played the entire preseason. Yet after Yao converted a 3-pt play to give 'em a 2 point lead at 76-74, they proceeded to play their best ball of the preseason. They scored the first 8 points of the 4th quarter, 2 on a great reverse lay-up from Brent Barry and Carl Landry was a beast the whole time he was out there. The schedule might be difficult to open the season (10 of 15 on the road), but it should be awesome to see how they match up with Dallas, Boston, Portland, the Lakers, Phoenix, San Antonio and New Orleans - whom they all see in the season's 1st ten games!!! Bring it on.

Most of the TV talking heads have been going on and on about how foolishly aggressive the Phillies have been at the plate, thus causing their 1-for-28 performance with runners in scoring position. But they won game 1 and in game 2, how about is Jayson Werth doesn't get doubled off first on a shallow fly to right field. How about if Kerwin Danley, the home plate ump, correctly rings up Rocco Baldelli when he should have? How about if Jimmy Rollins was awarded first base after a pitch hit him (his jersey, but it still counts)?
The Phillies did just about everything wrong and yet they still had Ryan Howard at the plate as the tying run in the 9th inning. So even though the Phillies took home field advantage from the Rays and are in position to close out the series in front of their own fans, most people are in panic mode, because Tampa's bats have been held down the last two games and now they come to a hitter's park to face Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton. Good luck, Phillies.
