The Texans stuck to their guns and held firm at 15 and 46 to select two impressive athletes on defense who both already have immediate roles with the team, yet some shortcomings as well.

15 - Brian Cushing is a big hitter and playmaker from an ultra-productive USC defense.
I don't think he's set to be an immediate game-changer and Diles and/or Adibi might be more solid, but jsut might not might as many impact plays - tackles for losses, sacks, QB pressures, etc. That can be a good or bad thing. Was he at least partially a product of an unbelievably talented group or was he at the forefront of that talent? He talked with us live during our draft coverage yesterday and Eric Winston was on with us so he already starting in on Cushing and the pony-tail that is sure to be gone very soon.
46 - Connor Barwin is an infant in terms of playing defensive end. One year of experience at Cincinnati where he was a convert from TE his final season. Also played hoops at UC and he kinda had a good combine. He was number 1 among defensive lineman in Broad Jump, Vertical Jump and 20-yard Shuttle. He ran a 4.66 40-yard dash which was second (Lawrence Sidbury, 4.64), but he's still pretty slight if you asked me, he was not surprisingly very close to the bottom in the bench press. Frank Bush and Gary Kubiak obviously made an attempt - even through a possibly limited specialist - to improve the pass rush. Barwin is very unlikely to be an every down DE any time soon or maybe ever, but he should play a role immediately in passing situations. He also ran a 4.49 at his pro day.
