Alright I've let the new year settle in on you a bit. Now here I come!!
Just to clean up the Texans season a bit...The Texans season ended with 2 straight wins. One when they played well on offense and special teams (Colts) and one when the played on defense and special teams(Browns). The Colts game still stands out to me as the most impressive win in team history - mainly because the coaches put a game plan in place that they knew would win them the game if it was executed properly. Then the players actually did flawlessly execute that plan and the result was a holiday treat for the fans.
The win over the Browns was merely one bad team beating another team that was worse. What stands out to me if the gameplan called for David Carr to do nothing. He threw just 15 passes and the one time he threw the ball more than 15 yards down the field, it was disastrous. And not because it resulted in a drive-killing interception. It was disastrous because it pointed out once again and once and for all - this guy does not have the makings of a really good quarterback.
I'm going to explain it all in a very nice way.
He does not show the ability to read defenses.
He does not go through his progressions.
He does not have a feel for the pocket.
He does not have a "clock" in his head.
He does not play his best when the game is on the line. (Now I will say that his 17 yard completion to Andre Johnson with 0:58 to go against the Colts was a nice throw and it essentially put the team in position to break the tie and win a game.)
He is not a worker. I could be wrong because I have only attended 75-85% of the team's practices over the last 5 years but this guy never stays after, and i never hear he or anyone else talking about how hard this guy works off the field in the film room. In fact I know to the contrary.
See that was nice, nowhere in there did I say he sucked. From our media perch in the pressbox at Reliant Stadium, I can see the plays develop (what you can't see on TV). It is simply amazing watching a game like this when Carr simply locks in on one receiver - we'll call him Andre - and that's that. He throws it no matter what. With no regard to if he's open or not.
I could go on and on and on and by the way I could be wrong, but that is my opinion so take it for what it's worth.
Sadly College Football is in the rear view mirror after Florida annihilated previously unbeaten Ohio State. It was clear-cut who the better team was on this night. Across the board Florida played better, but they won the game largely due to their complete dominance up front from their defensive line.
Nearly everyone agreed that Troy Smith was the best player in college this year and nearly everyone agreed that he could not have played worse. I'll attribute that to 80% Florida's defense and 20% to the 51 day layoff. That is absurd. This cannot be the way to produce high-quality football for the biggest game of the year.
As I said more to come this year, more often and more links so come on back.
