Basketball Jones....I got a Basketball Jones.....

Another day another win for the Rockets without Yao Ming…..98-90 over Memphis in the building that Federal Express is obviously over paying the naming rights. The Rockets were somewhat sloppy with their interior defense (56 Memphis points in the paint), but Shane Battier shut down Mike Miller (0-8 from the 3point arc) and left Pau Gasol helpless. Tracey McGrady had a couple of highlight reel dunks and dishes and continues to carry the Rockets on the offensive end. Houston is now 31-17 on the season and an astounding 14-7 without Yao Ming. A much bigger test awaits on Friday night in Dallas when the Rockets face the Mavericks. Adam and I will host the Rockets official viewing party at Champs Americana in Uptown Park (610 @ Post Oak).

Around the NBA....

The Celtics dropped their 15th consecutive game last night @Detroit. Doc Rivers and Danny Ainge still have paying gigs with the organization. I know the Celtics are missing Paul Pierce, but the majority of their games have not even been competitive. Doc Rivers is the 1st coach in NBA history to lead two different teams to a 15 game losing streak.

The Chicago Bulls fined rookie Tyrus Thomas $10,000 for telling the truth. He doesn't care about participating in the NBA slam dunk competition. Thomas was quoted in Tuesday's editions of the Chicago Tribune as saying: "I'm just going to go out there, get my check and call it a day." When asked if being around some of the game's greats could be beneficial for a rookie, he responded, "I'm just into the free money. That's it. I'll just do whatever when I get out there." Now Thomas will need a victory just to break even. If he wants to make $$$ on the trip he should bet on Gerald Green to win the competition. Unless Nate Robinson has 20 tries per dunk (again), Green (in my eyes) is the heavy favorite.

Former Rocket John Amaechi is about to come out of the closet...if you care. (I don't)http://outsports.com/nba/20062007/0207amaechi.html

In College Hoops News....

LSU dropped its 6th straight game last night @ Tennessee. Big Baby, Glenn Davis is a good college player but he has been extremely inconsistent without PG Darrel Mitchell and current Chicago Bulls rookie Tyrus Thomas. Davis had a season low 5 points in Knoxville and should go ahead and plan to spend his senior season in Baton Rouge. He has little chance of being a first round pick in what is shaping up to be an incredibly deep 2007 NBA draft.

Keep an eye on Memphis forward Joey Dorsey. The 6'9 junior is quietly having a monster year for the Tigers. In only 25 minutes a game, Dorsey is averaging nine points, 10 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game while shooting an incredible 63% from the field. I think Dorsey will be a much better player in the pros, because he is getting zero coaching from John Calipari and crew.
