Free Agent Frenzy, Doubting Wandy is Silly & more...

- Stupid, Stupid, Stupid money being spent since free aggency opened Friday in the NFL. The lineman are kings for sure, Kris Dielman, Eric Steinbach, Derrick Dockery and Leonard Davis getting combined contracts that are just a shade under $200 million!! I will no longer refer to any of the 'big uglies' as the most underappreciated players on an NFL team. FYI - that distinguished group has a combined zero Pro Bowls, right?

- One two inning stint in Florida and you can hand over the 4th starter's spot to Wandy Rodriguez. OK, sarcasm aside, even though I'm not in favor of seeing Rodriguez start games this year for the Astros, I am not against allowing him to prove that he should. Factually, he has more experience than the other legitimate contenders combined for the starting rotation. Matt Albers and Chris Sampson have had only slightly more than a cup of coffee, Fernando Nieve flip-flopped from starter and reliever a year ago. Brian Moehler is not a true candidate. To me there are two scenarios for Rodriguez if he's in the rotation and in the end they're both good for the ballclub. He either pitches well enough to deserve to keep his spot throughout the year or he pitches himself off the team and they'll finally know what they have instead of continuing to hope he'll turn the corner. (BTW - you can apply the same to Jason Lane, this is his last chance and so far he's cranked 2 bombs in 4 games. Too bad they are both against pitchers he's been crushing his whole career - minor leaguers!)

- Peter King's MMQB is always a good read. And there's always something that I disagree with. How 'bout you? For me it was this.
4. I know the Texans desperately wanted to make a splash in free agency, but Ahman Green? Paying Ahman Green $8 million in 2007? At age 30? Having missed 13 games due to injury the last two years? Having averaged 3.8 yards per carry over the last two years? I'm not saying he can't have a 1,300-yard year in 2007. I'm saying the odds are against it, and Dominic Rhodes or T.J. Duckett, to me, would have been better, and cheaper, options.
Question the signing all you want, because everybody will and they might right. But you really need to stop there. Please don't suggest signing Rhodes or Duckett as better options. That is exactly what they have done for 5 years and it's pathetic. Great you save money, you what else? You get what you pay for.
Rhodes=James Allen, Antowain Smith. (definition: a backup who has played well as a starter - BUT IS NOT A STARTER.) He had an excellent Super Bowl sure, but even Green's best season wasn't 6 years ago like Rhodes.
Duckett =Ron Dayne, Stacey Mack (definition: a big back capable of isolated afternoons of non-mediocrity, but not capable of carrying the load over the long haul) He's a short-yardage specialist at best. Third team in 3 years - hello?!? Seeing a pattern??
Again, Green may not be the answer, but there is no questioning he is capable. I'll tell you this right here, right now, I guarantee the Texans set a record this season for the longest rushing play in team history. No excuses, no caveats. It's going to happen.

I was just wondering what about the Texans picking up Dante Stallworth? I have heard that it seems that his stock as one of the top free agents is not as high anymore and I believe the Texans could definently use another wide reciever. However, if you believe there is no cap room what about a guy like Meachem out of Tennessee?
