Minor News & Notes

I gave you a glimpse of the minors for the first week of the season, so from here on it I'll post regular updates from those down on the farm for the Astros and others with local interest.

-- Mentioned this last night on the show, Troy Patton tossed 6 hitless for CC before being pulled. He allowed 3 walks and K'd 5. 51of his 87 pitches were strikes and his ERA dips to 0.75. The Rayz still dropped their 5th straight.
-- Hunter Pence raised his average from .174 to .259 last night going 3-4 with his 2nd HR and 3 RBI. He also stole his first base. It was in support of Phil Barzilla, who made his first start of the season after a couple of relief appearances. His are 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER = 1.13 ERA.
-- Former Owl Jeff Niemann has now made two starts for Durham (AAA) with the D-Rays. The numbers are very good and it's highly likely he'll make his major league debut sometime this season.
-- Former Cy Falls SS/P Clint Everts had a nice start to his season at Potomac (A) with the Nationals. He won his opening start against Lexington last week and is hoping to finally put it all together this season. Injuries and control have slowed his progress tremendously. Surely you remember he was drafted 5th overall in 2002 by the Expos, while teammate Scott Kazmir went 15th to the Mets. Kazmir struck out the first 8 batters he faced against Toronto last week in his 65th career ML start.
