- A chance to draw within 7 games of 1st place goes out the window because Jason Jennings is still in the rotation. He pitched well for 5 innings and he only made two bad pitches all night. Problem is both were made to Russell Martin and he blasted HRs on both fat pitches. BTW - he owns Jennings (9-23 lifetime). The game was lost in the 6th, when Jennings first had some misfortune. Juan Pierre hit a liner to CF that each of the major leagues' other 29 starting centerfielder would have caught, including Hunter Pence & Willy Taveras, but not Jason Lane. Then Matt Kemp singled through the hole vacated by SS Mark Loretta who was headed to 2B b/c Pierre was stealing. But Jennings managed to get 2 outs, allowing just Pierre to score on a sac fly. Then of course Martin hit a 2-run HR and Garner yanked Jennings. The numbers tell the story for Jennings.
- 17 starts, only 6 quality starts.
- Team is 3-15 when Jennings pitches. 51-51 when he doesn't.
- Among NL pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched, Jennings' 6.16 ERA ranks 92......out of 94.
- This from Yahoo! sports today suggests Jennings will still get paid. It's probably true and that's fine --- as long as it's not the Astros.

Let me get this straight.- At the end of '06, the Astros refused to offer arbitration to 5 players (Clemens, Pettitte, Huff, Bagwell and Springer). Thus they got no compensatory selections in the '07 draft. Offering arbitration is a gamble, but still Huff and Springer wouldn't have accepted and if they did so what. They're both better than guys you have now anyway. (Huff has 39 XBH - that's 3 more than Lance Berkman, obviously way more than San Diego's Morgan Ensberg who the Astros paid nearly 5 million bucks to this year)
- The Astros signed 2 Type A FAs in Carlos Lee and Woody Williams which cost them $112 million and their 1st & 2nd rd picks. Lee signing is fine, Williams signing was questionable at the time and now looks very bad. Woody makes $6.5 next year, too!!
- Then last night's deadline passed to sign drafted players (non-college seniors) or risk losing their rights and the Astros do not reach agreements with either of their top 2 picks or their 8th rd pick or their 13th rd pick. With no 1st or 2nd rd pick, that means they hauled in a grand total of 3 players in the drafts 1st 8 rounds. Yep, 3 of the top 274 players drafted are now members of the Astros - AWESOME! Hello 2008 World Series!!!

NFL. com has re-designed their site, but that news is pales incomparison to their line of fantasy football promo videos they have come out with. I thought several of the ones I'd already seen were pretty good. Jason Campbell, Andre Johnson, Braylon Edwards and others that are just well, less good - Chris Simms, Neil Rackers. But they suck compared to the one for Marques Colston seen below.----- more coming --------- WEX
