Rockets rock on, Reeves a bad idea, Cook County trailer

Wednesday night in Dallas will provide the true proving ground for the Rockets, but for the third straight game without Yao Ming the Rockets dominated the competition. The Nuggets were their 15th straight victim and they've all fallen essentially for the same reasons. Houston is crushing teams on the glass, they're making the extra pass and they are continuing to play their trademark stifling defense.

They'll get #16 in a row to set a franchise record, but then the fun begins with a trip the very next night to Dallas. During their 13-0 February, they faced exactly 1 western conference playoff team - New Orleans, whom they embarrassed in their own building beating the Hornets by 20.

The Rockets opened March with the Denver win; it'll be followed by 7 more games against the west's playoff teams, not to mention a visit to Houston from the team with the league's best record - the Celtics.

I'll be on with the 2 Live Stews this afternoon - they were on ESPN's First Take this morning with Skip Bayless. I can't wait to ask them how they manage to not blast him mercifully because he is such an embarrassment to journalists everywhere. This morning, Skip took the usual route of the completely uninformed, uneducated and downright foolish and suggested the Rockets are not only better off without Yao Ming, but far better off. Luckily it was only on this show and not some other national vehicle that fans around the country might actually watch.

I'll have more this afternoon about the upcoming schedule and why it's easy to GUARANTEE the Rockets will make the playoffs.

I waited until the weekend ended to give you some free agent thoughts regarding the Texans. They're not good. Signing LB Kevin Bentley for 3 years and $4 million is no big deal, but don't expect much - next year will be his 7th year and he's never been a full-time starter.

The signing of Jacques Reeves is not good. I don't want to go overboard bashing this deal, but I can't explain why the Texans are high on this guy. His former team, Dallas, had virtually no interest in bringing him back, following a year in which he started 13 games. He had started 1 game as a rookie in '04, none the following two seasons. He was a whipping boy for the Cowboys fans who have been overjoyed at his departure.

There is simply no way, based on performance, the Texans can like what they see in Reeves. But that's what a $20 million deal indicates. Reeves might have been the fastest corner on the market, but there are several corners, including Von Hutchins, who are just simply more proven. Hutchins signed for $9 million, Randall Gay, formerly of New England, signed for $17 million. All 3 were signed to 4 year deals. Gay started 9 games as a rookie, before injuries sidelined him much of the next 2 seasons. Last year of course he was a huge part of the AFC champs secondary. Hutchins obviously knows what the Texans like to do , has the ability to play both corner and safety. Bottom line - I don't like the deal, because I don't like the player. Add to that the fact they overpaid for him and you get the idea.

You know John McClain. You know Anna-Megan. That duo is busy at SportsRadio 610, and busy at chron.com with his blog and her blog. Now they're getting busy on the big screen - well one of them anyway. McClain continues to tease the Anna-Megan scenes in Cook County, so I'm intrigued. It's her movie debut, but far from it for McClain, who has been in countless movies - often starring as sportswriter #1 or sportswriter #2. It's called Cook County and Anson Mount and Xander Berkeley are the headliners. The premiere is set for March 10 as part of SXSW in Austin, here's the trailer.
