A disgraceful two days at Wrigley Field by the Astros pitching staff. 11 runs allowed in each game. All 11 runs on Wednesday given up by Brandon Backe in his start that lasted less than 4 innings. You think Backe was excited about being left on the mound after his 8-run 3rd inning? Not from the looks of this picture.
This type of performance is all too commonplace for this team, good teams don't do that. They have no stopper among the starters and before I go on with a full on rant of how ridiculous it is that management decided to get nothing for any of their veterans at the deadline so I'll just stop here.
I have never, ever, ever wavered on this and I can only hope this performance will finally convince the deluded fans and borderline insane management team that the 2008 Astros are not going to be a part of the 2008 major league baseball playoff race.
- Felipe Paulino threw his first pitches of the season as he got a rehab appearance out of the bully for Round Rock Tuesday night. Too bad he was lifted after just 20 pitches (12 strikes) and two-thirds of an inning because of elbow tightness. Paulino did hit 97 mph on the gun, but consider this a setback for sure.
- Latroy Hawkins has made 3 appearances so far for the Astros and has recorded 6 outs. All six have come via the strikeout.
- No doubt Ed Wade has allthe pitching woes taken care of after plucking 21-yr old RHP Jack Tilghman from the Continental Baseball League. No surprise he spent time in the Phillies organization prior to this season. Another former Phillie is drawing serious interest from the Astros. He used to be in this organization as well. Freddy Garcia worked out for scouts and the Astros were there. Whoop-tee-doo.
- Triple A Round Rock: RHP Ron Chiavacci posted a 3-1 record and a 3.23 ERA (14ER/39IP) in six starts in July to earn Round Rock Pitcher of the Month honors. The Astros acquired him for Stephen Randolph earlier this year. Chiavacci responded to the honor with this line in his first August start - 2.2 IP, 13 hits, 9 runs. Oh yeah he also sports a 5-11 record with a 5.95 ERA for the season. Only Brandon Backe thinks that ain't too bad.
