Kubiak - The day after the win vs. New Orleans

I checked in over at Reliant Stadium this afternoon for Coach Kubiak's day after press conference following the 31-27 win over the Saints.

Tomorrow as promised, I'll hit you with the updated projection for the 53-man roster, including those on the bubble.

Here's what Kubiak had to say on Sunday...

- Harry Williams is the ultimate bright spot on special teams, they'd like to see more guys make their mark on special teams - specifically mentioning Dominique Barber, Brandon Harrison and Chris Taylor.

-The passing game was excellent, pass protection was very good, except for the first play of the game. Kevin Walter and David Anderson singled out as guys who've been as good as anybody throughout camp and its showing on the field.

- Really pleased with how the second unit offensive line played. He cited Kasey Studdard as a much better player than he was a year ago and Rashad Butler graded out as high as anyone.

- Defense played well in spurts. Lost containment on a few runs and they need to work on that; pressure on the quarterback continues to be an issue. Gave up too many big plays.

- Mario Williams continues to look, Zac Diles had another good game and Amobi Okoye looked his best in 2 games. N.D. Kalu pushing to make this team with his work over the last week. Good to see Chaun Thompson on the field finally, although he's not at 100% yet. Thought Rosevelt Colvin was better this week, but nothing beyond that.

- John McClain asked him what the plans are for Slaton this week vs. Dallas and Kubiak indicated the coaches have discussed and agreed that they need to see him with the first group some against the Cowboys. The starters are slated to play about 3 quarters and Slaton will be in the mix as the game unfolds.

- He commented on Reeves inability to break up the long pass play to David Patten and said the good part is that he's in the right place, but they need to see him make a play on the ball. Said he's an excellent tackler. Also said the same thing happened to Molden, right place on the coverage but needs to get that head around.

- I asked Kubiak where he thought Duane Brown would be at this point in the season and Kubiak said he is way ahead of the game. He works hard and they through him into the fire right off the bat because they wanted to test him and push him and he has responded. Said he had a real bad first play of the game, but after that was good in pass protection and most of his mistakes are in the run game, mainly with techniques and where he needs to be down the field. Really pleased with where he is with 2 preseason games remaining before the season opener. Also said the offense needs the work against a 3-4 D which they'll get this week vs. the Cowboys.

- I also asked him if Anderson has played himself into getting reps once the season began and Kubiak's repsonse was, "I don't know how we'd keep him off the field at this point." He mentioned that even with Andre (Johnson) coming back and Walter and Davis playing well, when they go three wides - David is gonna be out there. The coaches know what he can do and he's played his way into being on the field.

- Said they need to continue to work with Jacoby on his confidence and focus. Obviously they can't keep seeing these mistakes so Davis and David Anderson and Jones are going to get equal reps this week working on punt returns.

- Regarding injuries, nothing serious with Vonta Leach's shoulder and nothing else from the game. They'll proceed with Andre Johnson as if he's ready to go this week. But he need to be about 110% before they'd put him out there. (basically Andre is healthy but we aren't gonna use him in a preseason game). Said Ahman Green is still likely out until the regular season opener - and that hasn't changed. They're going to push him more during workouts this week, but he's not going to play this week.
