Kazmir gutsy, Colt's staying, Mack Brown-best coach in America

In Scott Kazmir's first-ever World Series start, we gives up a 2-run first inning homer to Chase Utley. He stayed in trouble all night long and was one pitch away from disaster about ten times. But that disaster pitch never happened. Time and time again, he came up with a huge pitch to keep his team in the game. That was a gutsy performance. It was a grind. On a night when he could have melted down, he nearly matched the best pitcher going right now. Great effort. Too bad the team still trails 1-0 in the series anyway.

Was chatting with a buddy about game 1 last night in the early innings and suggested the pain an Astros fan might feel in the 9th inning. Here was my exact description of why and the time I sent the note...
8:36 PM Buddy: hard to believe zobrist starting in RF in world series
8:37 PM me: no doubt
wait til the 9th inning comes
8:38 PM bruntlett in OF with lidge on the hill
Buddy: vs. wheels, or is price the new closer?
me: zobrist in OF with miller facing howard only to be relieved by wheeler after hickey visits the mound

No my friend's name is not Buddy - I changed it.

- Colt McCoy tells the Sporting News he plans to stay for his senior season. Not really a bombshell, but anyway.
- Mack Brown has one national title in his decade -plus on the forty acres, but is he the best coach in America. This guy says yes.

It's just winter league baseball, but.....
Astros #1 pick in this past draft, Jason Castro is hitting very well in Hawaii for his Honolulu team. He's 17-for-47 and he homered (his 2nd) and doubled on Wednesday to raise his average in the Hawaiian Winter League to .362. Here are the season stats for his squad. The other Astros on this squad are P Chris Hicks and OF Jordan Parraz - their lines are brutal.

We discussed Brock Lesnar's interview on E:60 the other night. Same reporter who got Miguel Tejada to tear off his mic and walk out in the middle of the interview, got the same from Lesnar when he began to ask about steroid use. The walk-off was not aired during the original piece - but here's the video of the exchange.

We take the show on the road tonight to the Academy on Westheimer & Voss. Why? So Danny & I can hang out with the Texans Cheerleaders as they launch their new 2009 Swimsuit Calendar. If it's anything like last year - they'll have huge posters of all the cheerleaders from their photo shoot and each of the cheerleaders is there to meet & greet. Let me just say it's a nice scene.
So come and see us....errr...them.

Every week there is a media conference call with a opposing player and the head coach of the Texans next opponent. Chad Johnson of the Bengals was the player requested this week. Here is some of his best stuff...

Opening statement
“Is this everybody in Houston? I just want to start off by telling you guys I really love you guys, ok? I really do.”

(on his friendship with Texans WR Andre Johnson) “Oh, man. That’s my boy right there. I love ‘Dre (WR Andre Johnson) to death. We’ve been friends for a long time. In the offseason, we’re always together in the offseason. We work out at the same places. He’s a very good friend. We’re going on what, maybe nine or ten years now. It’s been a joy really watching him and really competing with him on I would say opposite sides of the world, but he’s not that far away. Another person, I don’t know if you guys know that (WR) Kevin Walter was here also with me. Kev’s got to be the hardest working receiver in football, to get where you’re at. If ya’ll get a chance, please tell him I said congratulations on all of the success and tell him that he still has the sexiest body in football, too.”

Johnson also asked the last names of the starting corners and he was told Jacques Reeves, DeMarcus Faggins and Dunta Robinson came back last week. That prompted this response from Johnson when asked to comment about Dunta...
“Yeah, I see (CB) Dunta (Robinson) in the offseason also. Tell Dunta I said be careful and congrats on getting back from that injury. And tell (CB) Jacques Reeves and Jacques Cousteau or whatever his name is… what’s the other guy’s name, Finnegan? (CB DeMarcus) Faggins. Tell them I said hello and it’s on.”

Closing statement from Chad Johnson
“Hey, again, guys I love you. Please tell (WR) Kevin (Walter) and ‘Dre (WR Andre Johnson) I love them and I’ll see them when I get down there. Tell them to take me to dinner, to McDonald’s, I’m a simple dude.

There's a bunch of good spoofish election videos out there. Here's another from Opie, Andy & the Fonz.

Interesting name for an article on Daryl Morey - maybe he listens to the SportsRadio 610 morning show with Marc & Andre Anyway, we know most of this stuff here in Houston, but always a good read when the national media wants to note how awesome Morey is at his job.
