Texans Dominate, NightShift Power 16 tonight, Poor Shasta (update)

Included below thus far is the Texans crushing the Chiefs, thoughts on the NightShift POWER 16, Shasta getting beaten up and even though it's a week old, just wanted to get Doggy Bounce stuck in all of your heads.
-----------------------------
So what was the biggest story of the Texans convincing 20-3 win over the Chiefs?? Great question, because there are several directions to look for a good answer. These 2 would be the best bets...

1. Was it Matt Schaub's debut as a Texan? The 1st 3 drives he led resulted in a 3-and-out, a poor throw for interception in the endzone and another 3-and-out. My question all preseason had been how will Schaub and this offense respond to adversity. Pretty good answer on that one. After the defense forced a fumble, he helped put 3 points on the board for the first lead of the game. His next drive probably was his best...1 play - 77 yards on a beautiful TD pass to Andre Johnson. He had protection and stood tall in the pocket and fired a strike. Perfect play call and perfect execution.

2. Was it the coming out party for Mario Williams? Hard to not have this as the stamp
on this game. The defense was dominant. The league's toughest runner was held to 43 yards. Mario had his first 2 sack game and first touchdown on a 38 yard scamper off one of the 3 forced turnovers by the defense. But it was so much more that. The boxscore shows 5 tackles (bested only by tackling machine DeMeco Ryans) and 3 quarterback hurries. He was involved in nearly everything the defense did well on Sunday. Coach Kubiak said after the game it was quite possibly the best team defensive performance in the history of the franchise and it is absolutely not a coincidence it came during a game when Mario truly was Super.

-- The Texans have not had a winning record at any point during a season since 10/31/04, when they beat Jacksonville to improve their record to 4-3 . Sad, but true.
-- The defense has not allowed a TD since the 15th game of last season against the eventual Super Bowl champion Colts. To be exact that's 122:41 and obviously covers two full games.
-- Of course that span also coincides with the first 3 game winning streak in team history.
-- They converted 9-14 third downs (64%), 2nd best all-time, only to the 10-14 (71%) performance in last December's win over Indianapolis. No coincidence that both occurred during Kubiak's reign.
-- The defense held the Chiefs to 219 yards, 3rd lowest in team history. The team held Jacksonville to 149 yards on 12/26/04 and Tennessee to 198 yards on 12/29/06.
-- The 77-yard TD connection was the longest for both Schaub and Johnson.
-- Matt Turk's net punting average of 48.7 was the best in franchise history. three full yards better than Chad Stanley's previous team-best of 45.7 back in '03. This just might be a good move!!
-- Here are the Texans largest margins of victory in team history.
12-26-04: 21-0 @ Jacksonville
10-22-06: 27-7 vs. Jacksonville
12-19-04: 24-5 @ Chicago
12-08-02: 24-6 @ Pittsburgh
Sunday : 20-3 vs. Kansas City - which means in Matt Schaub's 1st game as a starter in Houston and in Gary Kubiak and Rick Smith's 17th games as head coach and general manager, respectively, the Texans gave their fans the second most largest home victory ever.

Next time you are at Reliant Stadium and you need your fantasy football fix, give the Kangaroo TV device a try. These units are offered for rental for each home game and it's a handheld video unit offering Direct TV NFL Sunday Ticket. That's right, it means you can sit in your seat at Texans' games and still see any other NFL game you want right there in the palm of your hand and I'm talking video and audio of ALL games. We sampled a unit during the Chiefs game and it is sweet. If you hadn't already figured it out, we are spoiled. This is offered in only 4 NFL stadiums, so we're lucky here at Reliant Stadium.

- The NightShift POWER 16 will be revealed on Monday night's show with myself and Danny Vara (6-10 on Sportsradio610). DON'T expect a shake-up at the top. LSU throttled Virginia Tech, but the good news for the Hokies is they might have found their new quarterback in Tyrod Taylor. DO expect a shake-up amongst the rest of the top ten. Florida dominates again, as does OU and Penn State. West Virginia, Louisville, Cal and Wisconsin win but showed major cracks. Monday night at 6:40 we release WEEK TWO.

- Just following the lead of the NightShift, LSU has jumped to number 1 in the yet-to-be-released BCS Standings. This according to the BCS guru.

- Desean Jackson might still be a longshot to win the 2007 Heisman Trophy but not in my book. All this kid does is make huge plays. Last week he took a punt 78 yards for a huge score against SEC-power Tennessee and this week he took a reverse and weaved his way through the Colorado State defense for a 77 yard touchdown run. He only has 9 catches, but don't sleep on Desean. BTW, did you know that in his 3 seasons at Cal he has received 29 punts - He's returned 6 of 'em for TDs!

- Cougar fans are not going to like this. Oregon's mascot has been suspended for this Saturday's home game against Fresno State. Why? Basically for beating up Shasta. See for yourself.

- 0-2 Notre Dame meets 0-2 Michigan in the little tiny house in Ann Arbor. How do you handicap this one? Their 4 losses look like this. ND 33-3, 31-10, Michigan 34-32, 39-7 and those scores are not deceiving in any way. Notre Dame's offense has been an embarrassment and holy cow is the Michigan defense slow and inept.
