The deal is done Miguel Tejada is the new Astros SS. GM Ed Wade announced the deal this afternoon (heard live on Sportsradio 610.) He sent 3 pitchers (starters Troy Patton & Matt Albers, reliever Dennis Sarfate) along with 3B prospect Mike Constanzo (acquired earlier this offseason from Philadelphia) and OF Luke Scott. Wade announced the projected lineup he and manager Cecil Cooper have already discussed,
CF Bourn
2B Matsui
SS Tejada
1B Berkman
LF Lee
RF Pence
3B Wiggington
C Towles
My guess at the pitching rotation would be this..
Oswalt
Backe
Wandy
Sampson
Woody
with Paulino and Gutierrez making a play for a spot during spring training.
Now will it work. I am not concerned with the Mitchell report announcement expected Thursday. So what if Tejada is on it, I don't expect any punishment for any offenders. The concern is that Tejada was using something when he numbers look great and now he's using nothing and his numbers will suffer. The Mitchell report means little to that.
Tejada is more vocal than anyone else on this roster, but we'll see if he slides into that type of leadership role despite being a newcomer.
I think the Orioles helped themselves a lot more than the Astros did in this deal, analyzing it this way. They added 5 major leaguers to their team, the Astros added 1 and he's 31, going on 32. Albers and Patton should slot into the O's rotation right behind Erik Bedard, Sarfate sets up for Ray (or battles him for closer's job). Scott is the opening day starter in the outfield, and Costanzo probably gets called up during the year. The Astros still win the deal however if the best player in it remains Tejada. The major negative now is he makes $13 million for each of the next two and those other five make around $2 million combined.
It's a very, very bold move and shows big swingers (cajones, for those who don't follow). Wade and staff must have a lot of confidence that Backe, Wandy, Sampson, Paulino, Gutierrez and maybe even Fernando Nieve can be counted on next year. That is a big leap of faith. Not to mention the fact that they've now gift-wrapped the closers job to Chad Qualls.
Your thoughts?????

I guess they didn't want Adam Everett.
yep, the stros will non-tender him and he'll become a free agent. now the infield is wiggy, miggy, matsui, berkman with burke, loretta and blum as backups. I think the O's got a lot just nothing special. --- WEX
