MLB scouts were rounded up to vote on the top major leaguers in a myriad of categories. The results listed only those who finished first or second in the voting. The only Astros player to draw that type of high praise was Roy Oswalt, who tied with Boston's Josh Beckett as the 2nd toughest competitor. Padres ace and reigning Cy Young award winner, Jake Peavy topped the list. Peavy and Oswalt are slated to open the season against one another in San Diego.

(added) I've been asking this since the open of free agency, why were the Astros not interested in Kyle Lohse? He finally signed today with the St. Louis Cardinals. A 1-year, $4.5 million deal, that will likely hit about $5 million with incentives. He is a way, way better option than nearly every pitcher that was available.
Look at his game log from last season - note how many times he pitched into the 6th inning and gave his team a chance to win. No other pitcher in this price range was as good, he's only 29 years old and he has been extremely durable. Livan Hernandez got $5 million from the thrifty Twins, and IMO Lohse is significantly better.
Thanks to winning both of their arbitration cases, the Astros saved $3.65 million ($2.15 on Loretta, $1.5 on Valverde) - just a shade less than the amount of the Lohse contract and a whole heckuva lot less than their wasting on Kaz Matsui. I'd rather they just keep David Newhan to split time with Loretta - but too late for that.

(added) The timing of Lohse no longer being available seems like a double whammy to me considering the unfortunate news on Felipe Paulino. He said himself that he expects to miss 3-4 months. This team already had no pitching depth and this does not help matters.
