It was a 4 point game in the early stages of the 4th quarter Sunday night as the Rockets led the Blazers in the battle for the season series and the likely prize that goes with it - the 4th seed (or better) in the Western Conference. The Rockets have been hammered all season long for their poor 4th quarter execution and rightfully so. But not on this night. Houston now had a ten point lead, Portland called timeout yet would never be allowed to make a run. They would never even challenge. The lead never shrunk below 8 the rest of the way. Houston was 12 of 18 from the floor in the 4th quarter. Kyle Lowry had assists on 5 straight Rockets buckets. Portland's leading scorer through three quarters was LaMarcus Aldridge with 19 points. he finished with 22 after hitting ZERO shots in the final period.
Houston took the lead at 7-5 in the first quarter and they never relinquished that lead. Not easy to do in the NBA especially against a playoff team and this stage of the season. The Rockets will win their two home games against Orlando and New Orleans. Hopefully no Stephen Jackson in Golden State will help and Kevin Martin might get shut down with a bad ankle so that should help the Rockets in Sacramento. That leaves just the season finale in Dallas on the last day of the regular season. That game might not mean a thing to the Mavericks. Dallas hosts Utah on Wednesday and New Orleans on Friday, then goes to New Orleans on Sunday. If they lost 2 of those 3 games, then they almost be locked in to 8th place long before the Rockets get there on the last day of the season.
