Goodell again tries to show who is boss (updated)

Roger Goodell sure has been busy since he took from Paul Tagliabue. Makes you wonder how often Tags just looked the other way so he could continue to curry the owners favor. Anyway, Goodell slammed Belichick with a 500K fine, the Pats got a 250K invoice and the team will forfeit either a 1st rd pick - if they make the playoffs, or a 2nd & 3rd rd pick if they don't qualify for the playoffs. The 2nd contingency will also take effect if pigs fly or if hell freezes over. Most initial thoughts, mine included, were that Goodell did the right thing and had a fair punishment. Now I think most people, myself included, are convinced that it wasn't harsh enough. Goodell issued the following...

“I specifically considered whether to impose a suspension on Coach Belichick,” he wrote. “I have determined not to do so, largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension.”
You can't suspend the players (Tank, Pacman and the nickname needing Chris Henry), and not suspend the coaches, especially this transgression attacks the integrity of the game. No reason to stop at the fines and draft pick loss. Not to mention there is no room for interpretation, even though Mr.Arrogant Cockiness a.k.a Bill Belichick issued a statement that was a bunch of horse manure.

Wade Wilson is pissed. And he should be. He's an assistant coach and broke the rules when he acquired and used HGH. He got suspended 5 games and 100K. He wants an explanation from Goodell - he doesn't think the punsihments are consistent. Wilson is right.

You probably already knew that West Virginia had 2 Heisman Trophy candidates in QB Pat White and RB Steve Slaton. But did you know their most electrifying player is a 5'7" freshman. Take a look. Noel Devine's first 3 touches went for 31, 76 and 18 yards. For the season he is averaging 15.1 yards a carry and he's on pace to crack the 1,000 yard mark on his 67th carry!! Of course youtube.com is all over him from his senior season in Ft. Myers last yr. The first run in this video should give you a glimpse of his greatness.

Please tell me the Astros are not going to actually pay any attention to the 31 games that they have asked interim manager Cecil Cooper to guide the horribly, untalented roster through here at the end of a miserable season. As I've said all along, Phil wasn't the problem with this team - but I also don't think he was a good manager. It's all about the roster. Coop can't make these guys get hits with runners in scoring position; he can't turn Woody Williams into a legitimate member of the rotation. There might be 4 or 5 legitimate major league hitters on this roster, and maybe the same number of pitchers - young arms not included. That ain't Cecil's fault. Let Dan Evans or Ruben Amaro, Jr. fix those problems. That's right, those are my top 2 choices for the new GM.

The 1st huge college football weekend, with the next being October 6th. But look at the how the day should be...
2:00 PM Texas Tech at Rice - Scary to think what numbers Leach's offense might amass.
2:30 PM #22 Tennessee at #5 Florida - A 2nd loss for the Vols is coming.
2:30 PM #6 Texas at UCF - 1st sellout ever for UCF home game...and a loss, too.
2:30 PM #10 Ohio State at Washington - Be interesting for awhile with OSU squirming away with win.
2:30 PM Notre Dame at Michigan - Someone has to win, I'll go with Michigan.
2:30 PM Florida International at Miami (FL) - Anyone remember last year?
5:45 PM #16 Arkansas at Alabama - Saban's 1st test, 1st Heisman statement from McFadden also.
6:00 PM Fresno State at #19 Oregon - Can the Ducks win w/o the suspended Duck?
6:00 PM Houston at Tulane - 2 weeks to prep for the wave should lead to W for Coogs.
6:30 PM #9 Louisville at Kentucky - Fire up the scoreboard, you're gonna need it.
7:00 PM #1 USC at #14 Nebraska - Callahan's crew still not ready for prime time.
7:00 PM #21 Boston College at #15 Georgia Tech - A Ga. Tech win makes them favorites to win ACC.

The Greg Oden injury makes the Rockets home opener on Nov. 3 just a bit different. Can you believe the Rockets will be on the court in a preseason game in less than a month? How 'bout the first preseason home game - Panathinaikos. That's right, it's Vasillis Spanoulis' team. Yippee. Don't forget auditions for this year's Red Rowdies are on Sept. 22.
