Thoughts & Prayers to the Hohlfeld family

I was shocked and saddened when I heard the very sad news of the apparent heart attack that took longtime Chronicle writer Neil Hohlfeld this morning. He had been on the scene covering sports in Houston for roughly 30 years, most of them on the Astros beat. He was serving as an analyst for FSN's TV coverage of the Astros this season and made regular appearances on out morning show over the past year.

I had the pleasure of working alongside him as he handled the Houston Aeros beat in the mid-90's and I was in the very early stages of my local media career. He and I spent many a night as the lone reporters at the games up in the press box and talking with the motley crew that donned Aeros jerseys those seasons.

He had tremendous knowledge and passion for all that he covered and it was a joy to see him back analyzing the Astros after spending nearly half his career on their beat. He's certainly among the nicest, most respectful and most respected reporter I have had the pleasure of working alongside.

My thoughts and prayers go out the Hohlfeld family in this time of grief.
